Setting up an HTTPS Endpoint: from scratch or...?

Dear KPN, Forum users,

For a first LoRa project I'd like to deploy some 200 devices (programmable keys). After having played around with a Developer account on the KPN Things Portal, I was successful in setting up everything: messages successfully transmitted from my devices into the KPN Things Portal (up & downlink), also successfully worked with different destinations including MQTT over TLS (mosquitto, https://mosquitto.org/) and HTTPS (webhook/hookbin) on which I was able to receive the data forwarded by KPN Things Portal.

Now I'd like to scale up and I'm looking to select a robust service that can function as an HTTPS endpoint. As far as I'm concerned this can be anything ranging from a server application that I'll run on my own server (comparable to mosquitto), or a more established service such as MS Azure, AWS etc.

Do you have any recommendations on this? Is there ready-made application server software out there that directly works with KPN / ThingPark? Do you have some tutorial or instruction to which you can point me? Preferably the solution is both robust (secure) as well as scalable.

Thanks a lot in advance!

Cheers,

Hi @hhh1912 ,

Thanks for your question!
We don't normally advise users on an endpoint. We can only say that we have good experiences with Azure. And from a technical point of view, we offer good platform integrations for Azure with the Azure Event Hub and Azure IoT Hub destinations. These are links that are more robust than an HTTPS endpoint and are therefore more suitable for production integrations.

Hi @hhh1912 ,

I'm wondering is there any solution found? We have exact the same situation and exact the same reactions. I understand the statements, but it doesn't help us any further. Maybe you can share you're solution?

Thanks in advance!

Hi @Pascal87 ,

We did find a way forward, unfortunately not via this reseller but via another party. I'll PM you some details so you can move forward as well.

@Rick S.  We didn't have a subscription with SIMPoint (yet), their possibilities are indeed limited. That in itself was not the problem, but the lack of pointing to alternatives has been a problem for us.  I believe KPN can improve a little bit here.

Despite this thank you for your time.

Hi @hhh1912,

Luckily you found a way forward! Unfortunately not via Simpoint..

And to be honest, it was not totally clear to me that you were checking the possibilities with SIMPoint. We thought you already had subscription via SIMPoint.

Anyway, thanks for the feedback!

Hi @Rick S. ,

Thanks for your reply! I understand your position regarding advise on endpoints. The thing is currently we're quite in the dark on what to do: we're dealing with your reseller SIMPoint/Wireless Logic, but unfortunately they could not point us to anything useful regarding setting up a destination (other than Chirpstack, which so far doesn't seem to be the correct solution). The reason I was asking about an HTTPS endpoint is because SIMPoint asks for an Application Server URL which has to start with HTTPS. In contrary to your Things Portal (Dev account) they do not support an MQTT over TLS destination which I had already set up.

I hope you can help me just a little bit further. I'm more than willing to look into Azure Event/IoT Hub destinations, if this indeed works with the HTTPS URL that SIMPoint requires. Could you point me to some documentation where I can start?
Again: SIMPoint only allows me to specify an Application Server URL which has to start with HTTPS, and the format in which I'd like to receive the data (XML/JSON). I can't specify SAS key names, SAS keys, event space names etc. which the KPN Things Portal does require for Azure IoT/Event hub.

Thank you in advance!

Kind regards,

Hi @hhh1912,

Thanks for your reply! It was also not clear to me that you now have a subscription with SIMpoint. I’ve checkd this with my colleagues again and the possibilities at SIMpoint are indeed more limited. To discuss the possibilities for help with the HTTPS endpoint, I must therefore ask you to contact SIMpoint again.
